High Ground

Pima County Flood Control District hired me to develop an art element for the Arroyo Chico Multi-Use Project. This project included detention basins to prevent flooding of two residential neighborhoods along the course of the arroyo. The design development process included multiple meetings with and presentations to the two neighborhood associations adjacent to the project. The final design reflected input from these meetings and the siting reflected limitations imposed by the Army Corps of Engineers. The constructed basins, in essence, lift the adjoining neighborhoods above the threat of flood waters. The artwork gives form to the gesture of this lifting to ‘high ground’.  The kinetic component of the artwork moves with the wind direction, making a connection to the weather.
